Melkbosstrand has a massive 7km stretch of beach which is now well-known as a water sports location. Most visitors find that Melkbosstrand can also be an excellent base for experiences and day trips into the nearby Winelands as well as Cape Town. Melkbosstrand is an excellent place from which to observe Southern Right Whales in the spring month of September.
And even though it’s got the appeal of a quiet country settlement, Melkbosstrand is quite central to prime Western Cape places such as the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, the Winelands, and shopping areas like Ratanga Junction. If you look out across the 7km long expanse of beach to the bay beyond, you’ll see the outline of Table Mountain in the space. There are a variety of water-based activities in Melkbos including kitesurfing, jet skiing and the go.
Near Melkbosstrand sits Blaauwberg Hill. The storyline goes that sailors at sea will look to this part of a shore and see what resembled a hill that is blue. History buffs may be interested to know that Melkbosstrand stands quite close to the site of one of the critical – if short – colonial battles of South Africa: the Battle of Blaauwberg, which occurred in January 1806. It had been a fight involving the British that are seaborne, firing their cannon on to a motley assortment of colonials, as well as the sand dunes from their warships – on horseback and strongly outnumbered.
More than 9 000 British faced off against 2 000 Cape defensemen headed by the Dutch governor and came. From then on, the Cape was under British command for almost a century. Melkbosstrand is a more celebratory form of area, what with outside dining and dancing places, stylish cafes as well as a high-end resort less than 300m from the beachfront now. The town makes its living from a somewhat interesting combination of tourism as well as the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station that is nearby.
